Sitting on top of a flat chair seat for an extended amount of time can be a bit uncomfortable. Apart from that, the cushions that most of the chairs typically come with will become stiffer over time. Even though you will be able to change the cushion by reupholstering, the process is a bit tedious.
Now, if you were looking for something that can make it a bit comfortable for you to sit on top of a flat as a pancake chair, then what you need is a chair pillow. Now, you might wonder how do you make a chair pillow. Well, you will not have to worry about that because we are here to show you how.
Steps to Make a Chair Pillow
Making a chair pillow by yourself is an easy task. You will be able to easily make one by yourself in just an hour or two. The best part is that you will not have to be a DIY savvy person for making one. With that said, the steps that you have to follow for making a chair pillow are as follows:
Step 1: Gather the Necessary Materials
Before starting anything else, you will have to gather the necessary supplies first. The things that you are going to need for the process are:
- Scissor, marking pen, ruler
- Cover button kit
- Trim for the ties
- Fabric for the cushion
- Stuffing
- Thread and a sewing machine
- Sewing needle
For the fabric, a good amount would be about half a yard. That much amount of fabric should be enough for making a cushion for small to medium-sized chairs.
Step 2: Take Measurements
Now that you have gathered all the essential materials, you are ready to start the process. The starting task would be to take measurements. Measure the width and length of the chair. Also, keep in mind to add a couple of inches on each of the measurements that you are taking.
We would recommend you to add at least one inch for making a half inches seam on each of the sides. And for making the pillow a bit puffy, you should add one more inches on each side.
Step 3: Cut the Fabric
After taking all the measurements, you will have to start the cutting process. If you can get a tracing paper, this process would become effortless. However, you will still be able to carry out the process by taking a bit of time and taking things slow.
After making an appropriate cut on the fabric, you will have to fold it in half. Once you have done that, make the bottom edges round. Use a scissor for that.
Step 4: Cut Two Ties
The length of the ties will depend on the measurement that you have taken on step number two. Add about three more inches and cut a tie accordingly. For example, if the length of the fabric is about 16 inches, the length of the tie should be 19 inches. For the width, two inches should be more than enough.
Step 5: Make the Ties
If you plan to use a ribbon or a trim instead of ties, then you can skip this step. But if you do want to use ties, then fold the ties that you have cut on step number four. Fold them into half in case of length and press them.
After you have pressed them, you need to stitch it from all the sides and continue the stitching across the top. Turn the tie to the right side and fold the opening part a little. Then stitch the ends and close up the opening end.
Once you have done that, the next step would be to cut the tie into two halves, which will allow you to successfully make one tie.
For the second one, you must repeat the entire process. After you have done that, you should pin the ties. Start pinning in between the back and the front piece. The back and the front should be together on the right side.
Step 6: Start Sewing
First, start on the right side of the ties. Staring from the back right side of the tie, sew all the way across the right side. Stitch the back and then pivot and stitch the lower side. There should be an opening on the left for stuffing, which should be in the back. This opening should be in between the ties.
Then, you need to clip the corners and close the curves for the seam. After that, turn the entire opening right side out.
Step 7: Stuff the Cushion and Finish Sewing
Now, the last step would be to move on to the stuffing process. You will be able to fill it up with poly fill or any other stuffing that you prefer. Once you have stuffed the inside properly with stuffing, you must stitch the opening with a hand needle. You can implement a whip stitch, ladder stitch, or a blind stitch.
You will be able to make your seat cushion a bit fancy by stitching buttons on them. However, do cover the buttons with fabric before sewing them on top of the cushion.
